Studies Up Close and On Record The WallWalkers roped access video survey unit was called in to undertake a detailed investigation of the tower at Tewkesbury Abbey The Abbey Architect of 27 years, Neil Birdsall, of Birdsall, Swash and Blackman, needed to know the condition of the stonework in the tower to enable him to prepare a maintenance programme, so he commissioned WallWalkers to carry out a video survey of the tower, using roped access techniques. WallWalkers abseiled down the outside of the tower, filming the stonework with a live video link from the camera on the tower to a monitor on the ground. They also refurbished the lead gutters and gargoyles at the top of the tower and cleaned off vegetation, which would in the long term cause damage to the stonework. Tewkesbury Abbey is widely regarded as one of the great Romanesque buildings, with the largest tower of its kind in the country. |
