Spiritually Inspired Work

The spire at St Stephen's Church in Rochester Row has been repaired for the first time in its 150-year history

WallWalkers abseiled down the inside of the 184 ft spire to undertake the necessary re-pointing of the original stone section of the spire. A safety net was used to protect the bells from any falling debris whilst the work was carried out.

During World War lI the Victorian church was damaged by a bomb, which fell in Rochester Row. The spire became unsafe and the top half was taken off in 1968. In 1994, after 26 years with a truncated stump, the top half was finally restored with a polycarbonate cladding on a steel frame. Until now, the onginal stone section has required no maintenance.
