Working in High Places

When a new, state-of-the-art fire detection system was being installed in Gloucester Cathedral, it was imperative that the Cathedral was kept open for business as usual

WallWalkers installed the cables around pillars, up the spiral staircases and around the organ, avoiding the need to set up cumbersome scaffolding and disrupt the daily life of the Cathedral.
Norman commented, “The majority of the cabling can be done from the top of ladders. However, the spiral staircases and the area around the organ in particular, would have been impossible to reach this way."

With a grant from English Heritage, the fire detection system has been installed throughout the entire Cathedral. Incorporating a detection system in the roof voids, and a system for extinguishing fires in the library, it will all be controlled by a remote panel in the gatehouse, from where the fire brigade will be able to identify the location of any fire.
